Steam powered giraffe11/9/2023 ![]() ![]() This show spring-boarded young Steve into the world of theatrical sound, and he took more and more classes that allowed him to work hands-on with the audio department, and eventually land an overhire job at the La Jolla Playhouse.Īfter graduating from UCSD, Steve took some audio gigs here and there at theatres such as the Old Globe and North Coast Rep, but luck decided to smack him in the face like a frozen tuna. While at university, Steve signed up to run the sound board for one fateful show entitled The Labyrinth of Desire. This made for an excellent transition into the University of California, San Diego, where he was inundated with nothing but theatre classes. Steve's two years at Palomar Community College saw little theatre due to general course requirements, but he did manage to perform the lead role in his final semester. As he performed in more and more plays (which sometimes conflicted with that blasted marching band), he made the decision to take his major in theatre as he made the journey into college. However, his high school band room was located next to the school theatre, and as Steve's interest in performing music declined, his interest in performing onstage increased. He was involved with the school band through the whole of middle school and high school, but feels like high school marching band robbed him of four years of his life. ![]() Because his brothers were both aspiring musicians, Steve decided to try his hand at the trombone. As the youngest of three brothers, Steve constantly found himself following in his sibling's footsteps simply because he thought it was expected of him. Therefore, he considers himself to be a Southern California native by assimilation. Steve was born in the faraway land of Virginia, but his family relocated to Southern California when he was very young. Without Steve.we wouldn't know what to do with all these decibels. Each had just turned 18 and Steve knowingly hooked up with them both times. Shortly after Michael Reed's inappropriate actions came to light, two women came forward about Steve hooking up with them in 2013-2014. The variety of music, from soulful ballads to light romantic tunes, led the audience on a journey through the illusion of a world of Victorian singing automatons, complete with dancing maintenance workers dealing with breakdowns, to a helpful disembodied AI who implements “encore protocol. As of 2020, he is no longer working with the band due to instances he had with fans. It was amazing to hear hundreds of people singing along to the chorus of a song they know, love, and finally get to see live.įrom the mechanical mannerisms (with whirs and creaks created by the actors themselves), to the entrance of Gigi, a robotic puppet giraffe who enjoys doing impressions of varying quality and terrorizing the band members, the concert kept the audience engaged and enchanted throughout the whole show. To simply call the performance “zany fun” is tempting, but would vastly underplay the years of effort that the band has poured into crafting characters, music, and relationships with their fans. All this is, of course, underscored by the guitar genius of Michael Reid, the bands’ sole human member. This particular occasion consisted of such entertainments as a stuffed chicken (courtesy of an audience member) and comments on Florida and the possibility of a Sharknado-style infestation of gators. Performances are a combination of music and comedy. They are assisted by Steve “the Sound Guy” Negrete, Michael “The One-Man Band” Reid, and the two Walter Workers, Camille and Chelsea Penyak. Steam Powered Giraffe consists of three singing steam-powered automatons: Rabbit (Isabella “Bunny” Bennett), The Spine (David Michael Bennett), and Zero (Bryan Barbarin). Don’t let that worry you, though! For these automatons, concerts don’t only consist of music, but of comedy improv and audience interaction. However, one of those times was Steam Powered Giraffe’s Friday night show here at Dragon Con in Hyatt Centennial II–III. In twelve years of shows, The Spine has only snapped a guitar string three times. ![]()
